The Brazilian lnstitute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE)  completed 78 years of existence in 2014. IBGE is the key agency responsible for the production, analysis and dissemination of statistical, demographic, geographic and socio-economic information in Brazil.

Besides being the leading producer of Brazilian statistics, IBGE is the Coordinator of the National Statistical System. In the framework of the geosciences, it coordinates the National Cartographic System and is the primary provider of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure, providing digital national mapping on various scales.

To fulfill its mission in a country with 8.5 million square kilometers, 5,570 municipalities and over 200 million inhabitants, IBGE counts with 27 state units and 581 branches in major cities, supported by approximately 6,400 permanent technical staff and over 4,000 temporary staff for data collection.

Research and development activities are carried out across the agency, but have a home in the National School of Statistical Sciences, maintained by IBGE. This traditional institution (founded in 1953) is home to statistical education in three levels, from undergraduate to a recently approved doctoral programme in Population, Territory and Public Statistics. It also looks after continued professional development courses and training activities for staff, including a 'virtual school' which offers a variety of distance learning courses accessible via the internet.

From the coordination, production and dissemination of statistical and geographic information, IBGE provides a complete and current portrait of Brazil, meeting the demands of diverse sectors of society and different levels of government.

IBGE works closely with national and international organizations, establishing partnerships to pursue the best way to transform data into information. Information that will turn into knowledge.
